I recently had an intense contract that had an editor who tore my work apart with every single opportunity. For that, I couldn’t be more thankful.
I’m not going to sit here and pretend that seeing the marked up document didn’t shake me a bit. There were entire sections that had to be heavily reworked, things I had missed, and other limitations to my writing. There were periods of being upset, of feeling like I was worthless. I got over it though – these were places I could get better.
With every edit, I tried to get over my ego in every way. Edits aren’t a criticism of you or your worth, they’re about the work. And that’s exactly what I did.
I sent an email thanking the editor in question at the end of that project, thanking them for their work and all the things I learned. If you’re going to make it in this business, you’re going to have to keep getting better. Editors want you to get better – so make sure you thank them!
